Four Days On, Three Days Off – [Daily Prompt: You’ve Got the Power]

You have the power to enact a single law. What would it be?

Photographers, artists, poets: show us RULES.

Daily Prompt: You’ve Got the Power.

As I sit here at my desk trying to come up with a single law that I would create if I had the power, I am reminded how tired I feel and then I realize why.  Everyday I wake up at 5:30am to travel an hour to work to arrive by 8:00am and I work 9 straight hours until 5:00pm.  At approximately 5:00pm, I leave work to travel an hour, hour-and-a-half with rush hour traffic,  back home where I get maybe two hours of leisure before I involuntarily fall asleep.  I do this for five days straight and I should be grateful that I am awarded with 48 hours of time that I don’t have to go to work but to run errands and do chores that I don’t have the energy or the time to do throughout my 14 hour work days including travel during my five day work-week.

So after realizing how money and strangers dictate how I live my life, I came up with one law that would have to be mandatory in every state of this here United States.  All employers should apply and allow the four 10-hour work days and three days off work-week.  This should be our standard work-week going forward and those who choose to work more may do so because it is there right to.

Having an extra day added to our weekends would give us more time to get stuff done and be able to relax and take a breather from money, work and stress of everyone’s needs besides our own.  Working 10-hour days shouldn’t be difficult either because most of us just about do it anyway and if not, we make up for it in travel time.

The bottom line is we need a break!  I need a break.  My problem is, I am not able to spend the minutes, hours, days, months, and years of my life the way I choose because I have to be at work or sleep early so I can be at work the next day or I have to do my errands because I spend more time at work than I do at home.

In this economy, these days the money isn’t coming in the way it should and working more than “living” is not an option otherwise I will be “living” on the street because I won’t be able to afford my one bedroom apartment that I am struggling with now.

So, in closing, if I had the power to make one single law it would be to modify our standard work-week to Four days on with Three days off.  I guarantee employees will be more productive and motivated more if they had a little more time to enjoy the short time they have to live on this earth.

Think about it.  It ain’t too shabby.

You’re Are Only As Smart As Your Computer

We live in a technological era.  Over the course of the last 25-30 years, we have seen the evolution of technology.  We have watched the beepers turn to cell phones , talking turn to texting, books turn to screens, knowledge turn from something we possess to something we can search at any given moment, cassettes turn to cd, vhs to dvd, etc., etc., etc.

We come from  a place where a person built skills and possessed information to become successful.  A place where the brain retained relevant information based on studies and memory.  Today, we are in a place where we are dependent on technology and the unlimited access to search for anything right at our fingertips.  Pro or Con?

Children of the 2000’s will never know a time where a computer was not in every home, a cell phone is not buzzing or ringing and communication isn’t running rapid through emails, texting and social media.  There will be no experiences like going to the library to research an assignment for school or someone simply ringing your doorbell to see if you want to play outside or someone calling your house and you not being home to answer.  We are always available because we have access to communicate at all times.  You can get in touch with me anytime you want because I have a device that I take with me everywhere because God Forbid I miss your call, text or email in the second that you sent it to me.

We don’t have to pick up a newspaper to find out the news, we honestly don’t even need cable television to watch a show or have the news anchored to us, because we can go to any site that has headlines to see what is going on and we can watch most shows through the internet now also.

Now the point I am trying to get at is, we have come so far in our society with technology and our intelligence as far as mastering the machine to ultimately make us more powerful through machinery.  But the downside to this, is the lack of time we use to exercise our brain as a whole.  We build less skills, when having unlimited access to information at all times and if we didn’t ever need to have skills ever again, there would be no downside but because all good things must come to an end, and what goes up must come down, our dependency will be the downfall of humanity.  When communications fail, if satellites are destroyed by spontaneous actions in space, if we are stripped of having the rights to attain such knowledge because it will lead to a powerless world or lack of control to those who claim to be in charge, then what?  We will be lost.  Especially the children of our future, who were not taught to build knowledge because they are accustomed to searching every answer to any question that is tossed at them or given complete instructions on how to build anything without mastering it independently of any technological assistance.

What happens where we lose communications, if technology fails?  Then where will we find ourselves?  Without skills, retained knowledge and limited supply of tangible books.  Skills to abbreviate words and continuously use acronyms to belittle everything your trying to express will not help us when we return to mailing letters to keep in contact with each other and relying on tangible books to read without the acronyms.  To think we would have to return to using words that are grammatically correct and to write letters again that could exceed 140 characters.

There is always an upside and a downside to everything.  We always adapt but I hate to be naive and not protect myself from machine and networking failing.  So my advice, keep reading, continue to learn and not rely so much on what you can find as opposed to what you can learn and obtain in yourself.  One day your skills and your knowledge can possess the power that you may have never dreamed of having because you weren’t solely dependent on satellites and machinery.

As cliché and as old as a saying this may be, “Knowledge is Power”, don’t let them rob you of the power you can posses independently.

A Penny Among Quarters

She sat on the bus wondering, “what is all this meant for?”  She realizes that, she, like all others will pass on and her body will one day be a lifeless science experiment.  So why isn’t she embracing life and the simplicity it has to offer?  She is wasting away at her desk, one dragging moment at a time.   Her time is being taken from her for a piece of paper that everyone will cut throats to have more of.

She is alone, no one understands her.  She begins to drift away as these thoughts swish around in my mind.

“Where there is power, there is money and where there is money, there is blood but no answers.  Power and money at the hands of someone else’ blood and not even to be able to know the answers to worldwide questions such as why we need all this and what our purpose of living is.  Religion has its vague responses and scientists have theirs.  Why are we here?  Why are generations of people coming and going?  We work our lives into the ground for no real result because at any moment, it could end and we can’t take anything with us.  So why is it important now?

Peel the onion, lift the layers and go to the core.  You are a mind and a body.  What do we NEED to survive?  Clean air, water, fuel(food), peace.  After that and before the extras, what are we supposed to do with what we are given upon birth?  Make an impact?  Why?  Believe me, I want to make an impact and do something great but why?  You can’t take anything tangible with you upon death and we don’t know if there is consciousness after death to take anything that we have learned mentally.

We are supposed to be “good people”.  Do you know why?  So we don’t jeopardize lives of other people.  We have to be safe and be trustworthy in the least amount so that the world will go round.  Every day you trust someone, whether you are conscious of it or not.  You trust the bus driver won’t just suddenly decide to drive off the bridge or drive full speed into a wall.  You trust that no one will harm you at work or when you are shopping.  You trust that no matter how rude a person will be, they most likely won’t try to harm you violently or attack you in any way.  If you didn’t trust you would like in a cave because you wouldn’t trust the workers who built your home, the people you work for or the workers who prepare the food in any setting.   We are born and raised to put our faith in other human beings like ourselves.  Why?”

Is she the first person to ask, what is the purpose?  She knows the answer is no.  She is not even the trillionth person.  From the beginning of time, there was a “you” and a “me” in every generation with thoughts that were similar.  She is not sure what she is working towards, she realizes that none of these material things, tangible things excite her.  She does not find happiness having “stuff”.  For years, she keeps asking herself, “Why can’t I be happy?”  She may have realized that working her life into the ground to get material things is not her idea of a fulfilling life.  She needs something different.  She doesn’t want objects but what does she want?  She can’t figure out what will bring her happiness because right now all she is brought is pain and heartache.  She also realizes that this pain and heartache is a waste of time because what is it for?  How does this benefit any purpose that her life might have?  She has so many questions that will forever go unanswered.

She thinks to herself, something must change in her life.  She needs to do something drastic.  She needs to do something that makes her feel her worth.  Right now, her self worth appears to be as much as a penny does among quarters.
